Oracle database connection taking long time

Let me preface this by saying I am not a DBA or a programmer. I wrote a small application to pull data out of an oracle database. It was working great and fast until I got a user complaint one day a couple of months ago that the program was freezing up. It turned out that the SQL query was taking between 30seconds and minutes to run. The query had not changed and it used to be seconds. While doing some troubleshooting I noticed that if you put a date filter on the query, even if that date filter encompassed every item in the database, the query returned instantly.

I changed the program to put a date filter in by default which mostly fixed the issue but I still want to know what is going on.

Here is the only part of the 2 queries that is different. We do not have data going back before in the database but for some reason this makes everything fast again. AND trunc ML. My thought process was that even though the field clinicaldate is an index, i thought that querying based on that index should not give a performance gain because the criteria would contain ever item within the index. Sometimes to get Multiple tables to join together you have to split up the queries.

Nested queries are sometimes necessary for doing things like Union queries. If you can get all of the data you need out of a single query go for it. Sometimes people make a basic query that holds a larger set of dat and then use another query based on that query to get a smaller subset of data, group, etc.

If the column values are empty, that could filter it down as well. My guess would be millions or tens of millions of rows. They should not not be missing the date, and if they are it should be a very very small percentage.

There is an index on your table that includes the date.

Since a database can only use one index at a time, the Optimizer will try to do a best-fit unless you specify otherwise with a hint. If there is no date, this index is of no value, and the Optimizer may do a full table scan or it might build a custom index on the fly which is dropped after the query executes. You should look at the indexes on this table. You might do well to build an index for this application that includes only the items you need.

Remember the number of columns and the order of the columns is important. Also, you might want to look at statistics for this database. It is possible that old statistics have expired and there has not been a recent and successful stats gather job. Without statistics, the Optimizer cannot make decisions to speed up queries. If the answer is yes, you may need to revisit your tuning and find a workaround.

In this case, the date parameter or a new index may be the ticket, but I can't say for certain that either of these is correct without seeing your database. If so, you may want to consider running a job to coalesce, shrink, compact, or compress data segments. Again, I cannot offer any advice without seeing your database, but it's a fair statement to suggest you try coalesce first.

In some cases, it may be best to move a large table to a dedicated tablespace, but in others it is the absolute worst thing to do. If you have license for the performance and tuning pack, the Enterprise Manager can help you make decisions on how to proceed. This appendix contains the following information about troubleshooting:.
