The goal of fitting a 3DMM to an image is to find the model coefficients, the lighting and other imaging variables from which we can remodel that image as accurately as possible. The model coefficients consist of texture and of shape descriptors, and can without further processing be used in verification and recognition experiments.
Until now little research has been performed into the influence of the diverse parameters of the 3DMM on the recognition performance. In this paper we will introduce a Bayesian-based method for texture backmapping from multiple images. Using the information from multiple non-frontal views we construct a frontal view which can be used as input to 2D face recognition software. We also show how the number of triangles used in the fitting proces influences the recognition performance using the shape descriptors.
The 2D FR software outperforms the Morphable Model, but the Morphable Model can be useful as a preprocesser to synthesize a frontal view from a non-frontal view and also combine images with multiple views to a single frontal view.
We show results for this preprocessing technique by using an average face shape, a fitted face shape, with a MM texture, with the original texture and with a hybrid texture. The preprocessor has improved the verification results significantly on the dataset.

Evidently, 3D shapes and textures estimated for different images of the the same subject are similar. The 3D shapes of faces are well known to be discriminative. Yet despite this, they are rarely used for face recognition and always under controlled viewing conditions.
In response, we describe a robust method for regressing discriminative 3D morphable face models 3DMM. We overcome the shortage of training data required for this purpose by offering a method for generating huge numbers of labeled examples. Coupled with a 3D-3D face matching pipeline, we show the first competitive face recognition results on the LFW, YTF and IJB-A benchmarks using 3D face shapes as representations, rather than the opaque deep feature vectors used by other modern systems.

Each scan is in the form of a graph, where the vertices are locations on the surface of the face, and the edges connect the vertices to form a triangulated mesh. Each vertex also has a colour; hence the vertices define both the shape and the texture of a face. Each face is registered to a standard mesh, so that each vertex has the same location on any registered face.
The model has two components: i a mesh consisting of the mean face, and ii two matrices, one each for shape and texture that describe the various modes of variations from the mean.
The number of modes of variation depends on the size of the mesh, and also is different for shape and texture. Hence the appearance of a given face can be summarised by a set of coefficients that describe how much there is of each mode of variation.

While recent studies have shown impressive progress in 3D Morphable Model 3DMM based facial reconstruction, the settings are mostly restricted to a single view. There is an inherent drawback in the single-view setting: the lack of reliable 3D constraints can cause unresolvable ambiguities.
We in this paper explore 3DMM-based shape recovery in a different setting, where a set of multi-view facial images are given as input. Multiview geometric constraints are incorporated into the network by establishing dense correspondences between different views leveraging a novel self-supervised view alignment loss.
The main ingredient of the view alignment loss is a differentiable dense optical flow estimator that can backpropagate the alignment errors between an input view and a synthetic rendering from another input view, which is projected to the target view through the 3D shape to be inferred.
Through minimizing the view alignment loss, better 3D shapes can be recovered such that the synthetic projections from one view to another can better align with the observed image. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over other 3DMM methods. Fanzi Wu.

Reconstructing 3D facial shapes from 2D images is essential for many virtual reality VR and augmented reality AR applications. In order to obtain fully-rigged 3D meshes that are necessary for subsequent steps like facial animations and editing, 3D Morphable Model 3DMM [ 2 ] is often adopted in the reconstruction to provide a parametric representation of 3D face models. In spite of the remarkable progress in this topic, recovering 3DMM parameters from a single view suffers from an inherent drawback: the lack of reliable 3D constraints can cause unresolvable ambiguities, e.However, this task remains challenging especially under the large pose, when much of the information about the face is unknowable.

The next step is to use a weighted sum of the 3D parameters of both images : the frontal one and the original one. This allows to preserve the pose of the original image, but also enhance the identity information. The experiments show that PIFR algorithm has significantly improved the performance of 3D face reconstruction compared to the previous methods, especially in the extreme pose cases. PIFR method is largely relying on the 3DMM fitting process, which can be expressed as minimizing the error between the 2D coordinates of the 3D point projection and the ground truth.
However, the face generated by the 3D model has about 50, vertices, and thus iterative calculations result in the slow and ineffective convergence. Even though half of the landmarks are invisible due to extreme posture, which leads to large errors and failures of other methods, the PIFR method still performs quite well.
A novel 3D face reconstruction framework PIFR demonstrates good reconstruction performance even in extreme poses. This repository provides a Tensorflow implementation of our study where we propose a novel end-to-end semi-supervised adversarial framework to generate photorealistic face images of new identities with wide ranges of expressions, poses, and illuminations conditioned by a 3D morphable model. It regularizes cycle consistency by introducing an additional adversarial game between the two generator networks in an unsupervised fashion. This project is designed to fit a 3DMM to a frontal-face picture profile and a profile picture of the same person simultaneously. This is supposed to lead to a more reliable fitting result than the traditional way in which only one frontal face picture is used, since we acquired additional depth information from the extra profile image.
To add more "automation" flavour to the project, We also introduced landmark regression technique to generated landmarks used for 3DMM-fitting. It should be noticed that the frontal face landmark detection technique is quite mature, so we directly used Dlib-Python to realize the function.
However, the profile landmark detection has not been introduced as frequently, and there is no available annotated profile database on Internet.
So we eventually chose to use Dlib-Python to do the frontal face landmark regression, profile face bounding box location model generating and profile face detection; and to use AAM provided by menpo project to do the profile landmark regression. However, as the training set is limited, this automatic annotation approach can only be used on profile pictures in FERET dataset.
For other profile images, we provided manually marking tools to enable you to annotate them by hand. The 3D morphable model we used is also derived from their project, although we did some modification so that the model can be readily read by Python projects. For frontal face detection and landmark regression, please refer to Dlib. The installation of menpo lib can be found at their webpage. As the project has not been updated for a long time, some of it's library dependency is samewhat out-of-date and maybe conflict with current Python libraries.
It is recommended to install their lib in a new conda environment with python 3. After installing this, some minor updates and conflict solving are also need to be done to ensure all menpo function works properly. Specifically, jupyter notebook should be updated, and some dependencies of matplotlib such as ipywidgets must be downgraded to show widgets in jupyter notebook properly. The facial landmarks are saved as pts files with the same name as the pictures. Please note that the frontal-face landmarks are annotated according to the iBug 68 standard but the profile landmarks are annotated in a new way showed as below.
The frontal face image is automatically annotated with Dlib library. The profile image can be marked automatically or manually according to the image source. This function is mainly to make my research procedure easier and has no special use for this project.
